STEVE SMARTT

Trumpet, Vocals

Steve Smartt (blues handle: "Box Car") is a Nashville native, studied at the Blair School of Music and earned music degrees from Peabody College, but got his real music education playing rock and roll gigs from the time he was 13. He was a member of several of Nashville's established rock bands in the '60s and '70s, including the Knights, Crystals, Sounds of Time, Exotics and Spidels, Canned Soul, and the Chessmen. More recently, Steve has been a regular member and sideman with Sound Therapy big band, Soul Source, 12th Avenue South Band, Altered Egos jazz sextet, Jim Gibson Band, The Sons of the Beach, Soul Incision, and his own group - "Among Friends" - for weddings and reception events. His tour experience includes recent stints with Delbert McClinton and with Percy Sledge.

Steve says working with The Beaker Street Blues Band brings a new dimension to his musical experience, reviving some of the early blues and R & B tunes that made good use of horns. "I like the classic two-horn sound of sax plus trumpet and the variety and versatility of using the horns either out front and in your face, or way down low in the background. I'm always learning something new with this band and that's what makes it fun."
