Bio - Gary Link
Gary Link

Bass Guitar, Vocals

Gary was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1950.  He wasted little time and started playing guitar and piano at age 12.  He (like a lot of us) saw the Beatles and life was never the same again.   He fronted his 1st band in Pittsburgh (at the age of 14) called “This End Up”.   In 1968 he went to College at Penn State University where he majored in biology and played guitar and keyboards in a band called “The Loose Ends”.

In the summer of 1970, he worked with a band out of Union, Kentucky called “Borrowed Thyme”.  It is in this band that he met “Syd McGinnis” (who is now the guitarist in the David Letterman band).  Upon jamming on bass (for maybe the 2nd time), Syd encouraged him to play bass. “Syd, we all thank you”.   After his stint with “Borrowed Thyme” he returned to Penn State and played bass in numerous bands; then in 1972 he moved back to Pittsburgh and joined the band “Stillwater”.  Shortly thereafter he met singer-songwriter David Werner and recorded an album on RCA Records entitled “Whizz Kid”.  Through David, he met guitarist Mark Doyle and moved to Syracuse, NY to play with him and a singer named Joe Whiting in the “Mark Doyle & Joe Whiting and the All Stars Band”, then worked with “The Buddy Grealy Band”(also in Syracuse).

The next year (1975) he recorded another album with David Werner called “Imagination Quota”, then toured and recorded with Andy Pratt.  The release was entitled “Shiver in the Night”.

In 1978 he once again returned to Pittsburgh and formed a power trio called “The Dogs” (with Danny Stag, who went on to play and record with “Kingdom Come”.  When Gary moved to Los Angeles in 1978, his musical career took a turn for the big time.  He signed a deal with “Chopper” on Ariola Records and recorded with famed songwriter/producer Jeff Barry.  In 1980 Gary toured Europe with Don Dokken of “Dokken” fame.

From 1981-1984 Gary toured and recorded with John Kay & Steppenwolf.   After leaving the band, he toured & recorded with “Rita Coolidge” (1985-1991).   From 1992-1994 he performed and recorded with various entertainers in and around the Los Angeles area.

In 1994 Gary moved to Nashville, TN  where he has been laying down the groove in various rock and R&B situations in the local Nashville music scene since.
